Why is everyone talking about Retinol?

If you ask a Dermatologist for their skin care recommendations, they'll answer with two products... Wear SPF50 (365 days per year) and use Retinols regularly.

Retinols are Vitamin A derivatives have been proven to boost collagen production (reducing wrinkles and preventing fine lines), speed cell turnover (evening out discoloration and brightening skin tone) and unclogging pores (making them look smaller and reducing acne).

Retinol has been proven time and time again to reduce fine lines, give an exfoliating effect which smooths the skin and give a natural glow. It stimulates flexibility and elasticity of the skin, collagen and also helps to create a bright complexion as well as regenerating melanin to tackle pigmentation.

Whilst it's a derivative of vitamin A, Retinol is more easily transformed into retonic acid which is most beneficial for the skin. Therefore working harder and more easily than Vitamin A alone would.

We recommend 3 retinol products, Overnight Retinol Repair 0.5% (£79), Overnight Retinol Repair 1% (£95) and Age Reversal Eye Complex 0.1% (£64). Dermalogica Retinols are 'micro-encapsulated', which means the cream goes further into the skin before it starts to work. Therefore your skin is more likely to feel the benefits where it's needed. But they're strong products and we'd always recommend you take your therapists advice, here's our top tips for Retinol use:

  • Using a strength recommended by your therapist, probably starting from 0.5%, with the buffer cream to dilute the strength and use every other day initially. Before slowly working your way up to 1%. Your skin may take time to settle and the creams can cause dryness initially.

  • Use the creams at night because its best to avoid direct sunlight with the cream on the skin, they can cause sensitivity to light.

  • You only need the tiniest amount to achieve the best results, so be super mindful of how much product you're using, we recommend a grain of rice to start with, before building up to a small pea sized amount.

  • Skin may take up to 2 weeks to see a reduction in fine line and changes in texture, but the effect is long lasting and there's no reason not to continue using the creams throughout your lifetime. We tend to start recommending Retinols from late 20's onwards as preventative measures against skin ageing. But you really can start taking them at any time and enjoy the benefits and glow they'll provide!
